Lagos Comic Con drives growth in Nigeria’s creative industry


With what could be described as giant strides towards driving growth and impacting the economy of Nigeria, through the creative art industry; animators, gamers, film makers,writers, authors, comic lovers all gathered in Lagos at the weekend to showcase, sell and enjoy new creative ideas at the seventh edition of the Lagos Comic Con.

The annual event which is widely acclaimed Africa’s biggest geek event is organised by Ayo Elegba of Mustardseed Communication International, started in 2002 with 300 guest in attendance, but had over 5000 guest last Saturday with presence of key stakeholders and innovators drawn across the creative art industry.

The event’s theme was Aspire.Dream.Prosper. The event featured exhibitions of all sort, including movie trailers such as Pursuit, Knock out blessing, Rise of the saints, Upnorth and animations from youneek studios, plasmoid productions,comic republic, spoof animations, freak d f**kout. Different masterclasses were also held for guest in different chosen categories such as 3D animation, animation scripts etc

A few cosplay participants’ comic characters include Batman(popular DC comics), Toby(Naruto), Shuri(Black Panther), Sango, Ireti, Super girl, Rock Lee to mention but a few. Guests were thrilled to live performance by hiphop artist, Danny EL.

Speaking with Africatechreport, a first time guest, Oluwatosin Adewale said “This experience is fun, saw a lot of amazing things and got knowledge of few things had always wondered how they were done, the cosplay was amazing. This event will help more people to become creative and engaged”. Another guest, Chinaza Okorie, who was attending for the third time had mixed reaction “The event is interesting, exhibition was great but not up to expectation, going by the performance last year, they should do better next year. I know with this event the nation is in for growth in her economy”. One other  guest also shared same feeling but however noted that the event had more movies,masterclasses,cosplay and board games than that of  2017.

The climax of the event was the award ceremony as different awards were given to participants.

Comic panel fist award (best packaged comics) went to Aegis #4 of ephochstudios for the second time, Pterogote won the fan choice award.

Others include Etubi Onucheyo as best colourist, Martins Okonkwo as best artist among others.
